Bihari Fish Curry (fish Curry From Bihar)

It is typical way of cooking fish curry in the state of Bihar or Bihari community. Bihari people use a combination of cumin and coriander along with mustard in their curry. This particular recipe is a classic example of this combination. The secret of this spicy curry is the typical masala. The masala, Coriander, Cumin, Black pepper, Mustard seeds and Red chili is roasted slightly over low heat before grounding. This prevents it from being overcooked in oil and hence you get the awesome taste and flavour.

Fish (Rohu or katla) 250 grams (9 ounce)
Onion paste ½ cup
Tejpatta (bay leaf) 2 piece
Coriander powder 1/2 tablespoon
Turmeric powder 1 tablespoon
Cumin powder 1/2 tablespoon
Garlic paste 1 tablespoon
Yellow mustard paste 1/2 tablespoon
Black pepper powder 1/2 tablespoon
Red chilli powder 1/2 tablespoon
Mustard oil 5 tablespoon
Salt 1 tablespoon
Clean the fish and marinate it with ½ tablespoon of salt and turmeric powder for 15 mintues.
Heat mustard oil in a karahi and shallow fry all the fish pieces and then keep them aside.
In the remaining oil put bay leaves followed by onion and garlic paste. Sauté for 2 mintues
Then add coriander, cumin, black pepper, turmeric powder and mustard paste. Fry till the masala leaves the oil.
Add 1 cup of water, fish and salt. Cover it with a lid and cook over low flame for 15 mintues. Fish curry is ready, serve it with plain rice.
