Biri Chop

In this recipe, the humble Aloo-Chop is recreated using the batter of whole Urad, which is known as Biri-chop in Odisha. Biri chop is a traditional dish which is a Crowd-pleaser snack.Also perfect for brunch in the festive season.

1 cup Whole Urad
1 cup Boiled Potato
1 Onion
Garlic paste 1 tsp
Mustard seed 1 tsp
Cumin powder 1 tsp
Chopped Green Chili 1 tbsp
Curry leaves 2 sprig
1.5 tsp Salt
200 ml Cooking Oil
Soak the whole urad in water for 3 hours. Drain out the water and make a fine smooth paste in a grinder.
In a pan heat 2 tbsp oil. Add mustard seed and let it splutter. Add chopped onion, chopped green chili and fry for a minute. Add garlic paste and fry at medium flame. Add mashed boiled potato, cumin powder and mix well. Cook for a minute stirring continuously.Cool this mixture. Make lemon sized small balls using this mixture.
Take urad batter in a bowl. Add chopped curry leaves and salt to taste. Mix it well.
Heat oil in a Kadai/pan for frying the fritters. Dip one potato ball in urad dal batter and put into the hot oil. Repeat this process with all potato balls. Fry for 2 to 3 minute at medium flame until they are light brown.
Serve hot with Tomato-chutney or any Dip.
