This yummy chutney is basically a south Indian dish served with idlis, dosas, vadas. But I eat it as a dip with salads. With this chutney, salads are no more bland in taste.
Cooking Oil - 2tbspn
Onions - 2 large ( long chopped )
Coconut - 4 spoons ( grated )
Tomatoes - 3 ( Chopped )
Red Chilli Powder - 1tspn
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tspn
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tspn
Curry leaves - 8 to 10
Urad dal - tspn
Salt to taste
In a pan pour one spoon oil and heat it, then add onions.
Once the onions are half cooked, add the chopped tomatoes and cook well till the mixture becomes pulpy.
Now add red chilli powder, turmeric and salt and mix well.
Add grated coconut, mix and turn off immediately.
Allow the mixture to cool.
Grind this in a grinder so that it forms a paste.
Now in a small pan add remaining oil, cumin seeds and urad dal. After the cumin seeds start bursting add curry leaves and cook for 2 mins.
Add this to the above paste and mix well on low flame.
Pour a little amount of water if required. After it boils, turn the gas off
The chutney is ready.
You can also add chopped green chillies along with tomatoes if you want it more spicy.
